The Towers of Silence are circular-shaped buildings that have funeral customs and symbols for adherents of Zoroastrianism. They find the body of a corpse impure and therefore refuse to bury or cremate a body to avoid violating the sacredness of the land. They instead lay the corpse on top of a building in the mountains where the bodies are left to vultures. The bones are then soaked in lime so that they will dissolve when thrown into a river and carried to the sea—ideally, never touching the ground.
